AKTU Carry-Over (COP) & Back Paper Rules Explained

Got a back paper in your AKTU results? Learn how Carry-Over Papers (COP) work, how to satisfy the mandatory 50% credit threshold to avoid a Year Back, and how to register on ERP.

Important Student Notice: akturesult.bond is an independent student utility platform and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or officially connected to Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU). This regulatory breakdown is based on the official AKTU Bachelor of Technology Ordinances.

1. What is a Carry-Over Paper (COP)?

In AKTU, failing a course (scoring less than 30% in external theory or less than 40% aggregate) results in a letter grade 'F'. Rather than forcing you to repeat the entire semester, the university allows you to "carry over" the subject and retake the written examination in a future term alongside your regular coursework.

  • Odd Semester Backs: Retaken during subsequent odd semester examination sessions (e.g., 3rd semester back retaken during 5th or 7th semester).
  • Even Semester Backs: Retaken during subsequent even semester sessions (e.g., 2nd semester back retaken during 4th or 6th semester).
  • Sessional Marks Preservation: Your original internal sessional marks awarded by your college are permanently retained; you only re-sit the external written exam.

2. The 50% Credit Rule & Year Back (YB) Avoidance

While you can carry back papers into higher semesters, progression to the next academic year is subject to the strict 50% Credit Rule:

Progression StageMandatory Academic RequirementPenalty if Failed
1st Year → 2nd YearMust earn at least 50% of total credits assigned across Semester 1 and Semester 2 combined.Year Back (Repeat 1st Year)
2nd Year → 3rd YearMust earn at least 50% credits of 2nd year AND have zero uncleared back papers from 1st Year.Year Back (Cannot enter 3rd Year)
3rd Year → 4th YearMust earn at least 50% credits of 3rd year AND have zero uncleared back papers from 2nd Year.Year Back (Cannot enter 4th Year)

3. Special Carry-Over Paper (SCOP) for Final Year Students

Final-year students who have completed all 8 semesters but carry uncleared back papers do not have to wait a full year:

Special Carry Over Examination Rules:

AKTU conducts a special examination session (usually in September/October) exclusively for final-year pass-out students. This allows eligible graduates to clear backlogs, finalize their degree, and join campus placements or postgraduate programs without losing an academic cycle.

4. How to Register for COP Exams & Pay Fees

When exam registration opens each semester, students must register for their back papers on the official ERP dashboard:

  1. Log into your account at erp.aktu.ac.in.
  2. Click Examination Form Dashboard.
  3. Your regular semester subjects will appear pre-selected. Under the Carry Over Subjects table, select the specific back papers you wish to appear for.
  4. Review the examination fee (the standard university fee is typically ₹1,000 per theory subject).
  5. Pay the fee online via the integrated university payment gateway (Net Banking / Debit Card / UPI).
  6. Download and print your examination form receipt for your records.

5. Impact of COP on Degree & Honours

First Division is Still Possible

Clearing a COP updates your marksheet. If your final cumulative CGPA is ≥ 6.50, you will still be awarded an official First Division on your graduation degree.

Honours Eligibility is Forfeited

To receive "First Division with Honours" (Distinction), university ordinances mandate that every single course must be cleared in the first attempt without any back papers.
